About this Calculator

🧮

Why this Calculator Matters

This Digital Carbon Footprint Calculator is designed to help users understand the environmental impact of their everyday digital activities. Many people are unaware that actions like streaming, browsing, and cloud storage contribute to carbon emissions. Unlike traditional carbon footprint calculators that focus on areas like transportation, energy use, and diet, this tool specifically measures the impact of digital behaviors, making it more relevant to modern technology use. This tool translates those activities into measurable CO₂ output, making an invisible impact visible.

Calculation Formulas

Total Annual CO₂ Emissions Formula:

Total = (Devices × 4.5) + (Daily Usage × Activity × 0.4) + (Quality × Streaming Hours × 0.35) + (Cloud Storage × 2.4) + (Emails × 1.5)

Component Breakdown:

  • Device Manufacturing Impact: Devices × 4.5 kg CO₂/year
    (Embodied carbon from device production and manufacturing)
  • Daily Usage Impact: Daily Usage × Activity × 0.4 kg CO₂/year
    (Electricity consumption from device operation)
  • Streaming Impact: Quality × Streaming Hours × 0.35 kg CO₂/year
    (Data center and network energy for streaming services)
  • Cloud Storage Impact: Cloud Storage × 2.4 kg CO₂/year
    (Data center energy for cloud storage and processing)
  • Email Impact: Emails × 1.5 kg CO₂/year
    (Server energy for email processing and storage)

Driving Miles Equivalent:

Miles = Total CO₂ ÷ 0.404

(Based on EPA average of 0.404 kg CO₂ per mile driven by car)
